IKONOS Sensor Overview
|

| |
|
| IKONOS is derived from the Greek word
for "image." The IKONOS satellite is the world's
first commercial satellite to collect black-and-white
images with 1-meter resolution and multispectral imagery
with 4-meter resolution. |
|

Sensor Characteristics
|
|
|
| |
|
The IKONOS satellite weighs about 1600
pounds. It orbits the Earth every 98 minutes at an altitude
of approximately 680 kilometers or 423 miles. IKONOS was
launched into a sun-synchronous orbit, passing a given
longitude at about the same local time (10:30 A.M.) daily.
IKONOS can produce 1-meter imagery of the same geography
every 3 days.

Image Processing Services
|

| Satellite imagery users can also have the following image processing services. |

Radiometric Balancing – To balance radiometrically dissimilar images. |
|
Goepositioning – This service increases the absolute and relative positional accuracy of the image using a set of control points of the area. |
|
Digital Elevation Data production – This service provides a digital file with ground elevations to derive the Three-dimensional visualization of the terrain. |
|
Orthorectification and Mosaicking – Ortho rectification is done to preserve the positional accuracy for the areas with high undulations. This is compulsory in mapping of hilly areas. Mosaicking is done to combine imagery together when the area is covered by more than one image. |

Land use and Land cover classification – This service provides Land use and Land cover maps after classifying the satellite imagery. |

| Digital Elevation Model (DEM) |
|
|
|
| |
|
| DEM gives a 3 dimensional visualization of the earth. The DEM derived from IKONOS satellite imagery is called as ITM (IKONOS Terrain Model). This forms the basis for three-dimensional visualization, hydrology, degree and stability of slopes, least-cost-path analysis applications and other critical geographic modeling. Other applications include site planning for telecommunications, 3D terrain visualization for flight simulation, topographic map production, and photogrammetric digital image othorectification. |
