High resolution IKONOS imagery service by GENESIIS
With the development of space technology, there was a great revolution in spatial data gathering systems. The satellites were used as a platform to carry the equipment called ‘Sensor’ which is able to detect the electromagnetic radiations emitted or reflected by the objects on the earth surface.
By analyzing these sensor data, earth was compacted and brought to a digital screen. This became a rapid, efficient and economical method of gathering spatial data of a large area.
GeoEye as the world’s largest commercial Remote Sensing Company owns and operates IKONOS , the world’s first high resolution commercial Remote Sensing satellite launched in 1999. It delivers 1 meter panchromatic (Black & White) and 4 meter multispectral (color) images of the earth in a speed of 2,000 square kilometers per minute. The satellite revisits the area once in three days and cross the equator normally 10.30 am in solar time.
IKONOS imagery contains the highest spatial resolution and a high temporal resolution. These imagery are widely used in land use mapping, development planning and in change detections in most developed countries. One can use these images itself as an up-to-date topographic map as well.
